(Ruffin, N.C.) — A Ruffin man is in jail on charges that he shot a woman at his apartment.

The Rockingham County Sheriff’s Department alleges that 45-year-old James William Hairston Jr. shot 28-year-old Angelina Peeler at his apartment on NC Highway 700 Monday morning. Peeler was seriously injured in the shooting.

Peeler initially told investigators she was shot walking along the road. Officers later learned the shooting happened in Hairston’s apartment.

Deputies arrested Hairston and charged him with attempted first- degree murder, assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

Hairston is in the Rockingham County Detention Center under a $500,000 secured bond.
